In todays edition of Fresh Android Apps, we introduce you to a new feature in Google Translate that translates foreign words captured in pictures, explain what users should expect from a free version of FlightTrack, and convene with the new official app for the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Users who updated to the most recent 2.5 version of Google Translate may find that pictures not only worth 1000 words, but words captured in those pictures can be translated into multiple languages. Using technology already contained within Google Goggles and Word Lens to some extent, Google Translate now lets users tap the text they want translated in the picture, and then supply translations in Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian. Overall, Google Translate supports 64 languages, so expect more to come online shortly.
While the new Google Translate feature is not as slick and doesnt provide as many features as Word Lens, the free price point (as opposed to the $4.99 option) makes it a compelling alternative.
Road warriors who have long heard about the best-in-breed FlightTrack application, but are not willing to shell out $4.99 and deal with the hassle of downloading it to their tablet device now have a free option. FlightTrack Free is a scaled down, but still quite useful, application that lets users track flights (one flight at a time as opposed to multiple) and locate baggage information. While this doesnt have all the bells and whistles of the more premium versions of FlightTrack, the free version is fully functional and offers a refreshing, redesigned interface. If you havent used FlightTrack in the past, this is a worthy download that may inspire you to invest in more advanced versions.
In anticipation of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which begins September 3 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Democratic Party this week released the official DNC 2012 Android application. The app offers live video streams and photos for those who cannot attend convention events at Time Warner Cable Arena or Bank of America Stadium. Convention delegates can use the app to tap into a layout of the convention hall and find out the hotspots in Charlotte for some after hours fun. The free app, developed by AT&T, also includes a live Tweet feed.
