Pinterest tops Android Apps of the Week

After months of waiting, misguided expectations and rumors, popular pin-board service Pinterest finally launched a mobile application for Android. WebMD also unveiled a new Android app for babies, while President Obama ramps up his mobile outreach with an app just in time for election season. Here are this weeks top apps.

Pinterest (Free)

Pinterest, now the fastest-growing website, has finally gone mobile. You can discover, collect and share inspiration directly from your Android device, without third-party browser add-ons. From the app you can organize your pinboards across every subject your heart desires, from home design to recipes. Pin what you love while surfing the mobile web or with your phone camera, and re-pin existing Pinterest items. You can access all the boards curated by the pinners you follow and leave comments.

WebMD Baby (Free)

WebMD is a trusted source for medical information, and was an early adapter to the mobile scene. Now you can get pediatrician-specific news and information on baby health and wellness anytime, personalized for your babys age. The free resource offers recommendations and information on gear, milestones, illnesses and doctor check-up schedules. Other features include a toolset for tracking height and weight, feeding schedules, and a sleep timer and diaper changes. Theres even a scrapbook-like feature that lets you record and share babys most memorable moments.

Obama for America (Free)

It makes perfect sense that President Obamas campaign released the Obama for America Android app just in time for election season. The app is designed to help you spread the word about Obama, as he strives for a second term in office. With the app you can get numbers and stats on the economic impact of Obamas first term, state voting laws and deadlines, and breaking news, which you can share across Facebook and Twitter. The app also helps you take action in your community, with an option to sign up for canvassing to encourage people to vote. Youll see local events for volunteering and upcoming visits from the President and First Lady Michelle Obama, with options to RSVP and invite friends. And of course, you can donate to Obamas campaign directly from the app.

Americas Economy for Phone (Free)

The U.S. Census Bureau has been doing its best to make its data more available to the public. Enter Americas Economy for Phone, an Android app that delivers real-time updates for 16 key economic indicators released from top organizations including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. See the latest trends on employment, manufacturing, international trade, retail sales, and residential construction and sales. Theres an Overview page and Detailed page for each indicator, with options to share numbers on Facebook and Twitter. You can set up custom notifications for incoming reports, offering insight on business inventories, durable goods, monthly wholesale trends and much more. Theres a dedicated tablet version as well.

AT&T DriveMode (Free)

Texting while driving has become a major issue across the country. Despite laws against this dangerous behavior, an increasing number of texting-related accidents occur every year. AT&T is stepping up its efforts to curb texting while drivin with the new DriveMode app. It temporarily disables certain phone features so you stay focused on the road. When the app is turned on it silences audible notification for incoming texts, emails and calls, and those trying to reach you will get an auto-reply that lets them know youre on the road and will get back to them later. In DriveMode you cant send or receive texts, though you can make and receive calls to/from up to five people, and youll always be able to dial 911 in the event of an emergency.

Google Maps update (Free)

Google Maps has rolled out a major update thats available across the entire platform that mostly impacts mobile users. Over 1 million stops for public transportation systems around the world have been added to Google Maps, so you can better plan your trek about town. You can see when and where a train or bus will stop, the time between busses and trains, and view your travel history. Additional updates include region highlighting and new tabs for My Places with more integrated information. While Google Maps continues to evolve, the competition is really heating up now that Apple is releasing its own Maps feature with the upcoming iOS 6 update, removing Google Maps as the default.
