Android App Video Review: Great Big War Game

This is one that I've been waiting a while a for. It's been quite a long time since Rubicon Development put out Great Little War Game, a fantastic turn based strategy title with a sense of humor. Now, we finally get a sequel in Great Big War Game, and "Big" is definitely a fitting descriptor. This game ups the ante everywhere, with more units, stronger design, and a huge campaign mode. It's not as original as the first, and is essentially more of the same, except way, way better.

We rejoin the Generalissimo and his army, including his new assistant, Candy, in their ongoing war efforts. That's pretty much all there is to the story. On to the gameplay! The turn based, hexagonal gameplay is more polished than ever, with balancing tweaks and new units. More importantly, the missions themselves are often very complex and well designed, requiring real strategizing. The mission objectives are more varied than ever, including fun tasks like assassinating the enemy general or saving up large amounts of gold. As you play, you'll also earn battle points, which can be used to buy permanent upgrades for your units.

Aside from the single player, we have a thriving multiplayer. Whether you want to play against AI opponents or real people in the skirmish mode or just pass and play with a friend, Rubicon has you covered. There are more customization options than ever, and you can even design your nations flag! The humor has also been turned up to eleven, with hilarious cut scenes between missions and great lines from individual units.

Technically, the game is very similar to the last, with only slight visual improvements, but the game still looks great. They've also introduced a very literal fog of war mechanic, making scout units very useful and upping the strategic elements even more. It's a charming, hilarious title with unique visuals and solid gameplay. It's still not a perfect game and really feels like a lot more of the same, but it's definitely worth a download. Great Big War Game is available for three dollars at the time of this review, which is a steal considering the massive amount of hours you can waste playing it!
