Ninja Slash n Run tops Android Games of the Week

Even during slow times in the calendar before the holiday rush, there are plenty of new games to tap into on your Android device. Especially the top game of this week, Ninja Slash 'n Run from Catfish Blues games. Endless running meets Fruit Ninja finger slicing in this one, so what's not to love? We also have a new JRPG from Kemco, a cute dodging game, a clone of a Tiny Wings clone, and a passable aerial/space combat game. Here are this week's top Android games!

Ninja Slash 'n Run (Free)

This is the latest from developer CatfishBlues Games, known for title like Hyperlight and Tiny Comet. This latest title is an endless runner with a sharp twist. Starring a kunoichi named Ran, it combines Fruit Ninja style slicing mechanics with your usual jumping to make things more intense and engaging. You'll have to slice enemies, boxes, items, and yes, even fruit. But you have to be conservative, as your spirit blade has a limited amount of energy. The cartoon visuals are colorful and well done. You can always count on CatfishBlues to bring you something solid with good production values, and that remains true here.

Dodge! Dodge! Dodge It! (Free)

This is a cute casual arcade title from Socosoft, responsible for games like Unstoppable Penguin. It's a straightforward game about the challenge and not much else. You hold each side of the screen to move your character around, dodging various bouncing balls, picking up health, slow-down, and shield pick-ups among other things. The longer you go, the more balls end up bouncing around you, the more intense it gets. You can save up in-game coins for various power-ups and boosts, or just for fun random things, like costumes. They even have a Transformers Optimus Prime costume. It's an adorable little game that's worth checking out.

RPG Knight of the Earthends ($3.99)

Here we have the latest RPG from Kemco Games, a developer that loves putting "RPG" right in their titles, like with RPG Grinsia or RPG Alphadia (but unlike their more popular Symphony of Eternity.) This latest title is more of your standard JRPG fair. You play as a female Knight who is assigned to take care of some monsters, sent out with a golem that looks like a human, and the two of them find a magical horned girl. Developments arise, and we're saving the world. While it's mostly basic JRPG combat, there are always a couple novel mechanics to be found in Kemco's games, and the touch controls are better than ever.

Dragon Run ($1.60)

This is one of the many recent games from 365 Games. They don't usually grace my lists, but give me a break, it's been a slow week. The developer pretty much specializes in clones, and this latest game is a Tiny Wings, or rather a Dragon, Fly! alternative, but with an eastern dragon motif going on. It mixes things up mechanically in terms of powers and items that you can collect, and it's pretty good overall. Unfortunately, people are having irritating frame-rate issues. The gameplay is decent, but the production values are simply lazy. You wouldn't even know they have a mission objective system unless you went looking for it in the menus.

Solar Warfare ($0.99)

Solar Warfare is a new aerial combat game from TegTap. It's very reminiscent of classic games like Star Fox 64, though not nearly as good. In it, pretty much all of humanity is wiped out by aliens, and you are literally the last remaining pilot who yet draws breath. The gameplay is pretty solid, once again, but it's the lack of some pretty basic features that can really grate on you. I'd love to have a basic targeting reticule, for example. The visuals are pretty nice, aside from pop-in and occasional glitches. The tilt controls are actually not too shabby, but you'll spend more time fighting the controls than enemies, which is a shame. But I'm being pretty nit-picky today. It's still fairly enjoyable.
