Don Bluth Insists On Making Your Life Weirder By Releasing The Laserdisc Classic 'Space Ace' On Android

Don Bluth... What happened? You had such a good run. You made film history by actually giving Disney a run for it's money with Secret of NIMH, An American Tail, and The Land Before Time. They were classics! But then Rock-A-Doodle happened. Then Thumbelina. Then...lord forgive me for speaking it's name...A Troll in Central Park. The decline was quick and painful. Before the movies started getting weird, though, Dragon's Lair came out and revolutionized the laser disc gaming industry (no seriously). While that title actually saw some initial success due to the unique tech (and notably high price point at $0.50 per play), the follow-up game, Space Ace, did not do nearly as well. That was nearly three decades ago, though. If you want to give it a go for yourself, now you can! And it will only cost you $5.

Yes, following the Dragon's Lair Android port, Digital Leisure has released Space Ace. The title has been remastered from the original hand-drawn film and adapted for touch-based controls. It's even been made compatible with Android 1.6 and up, phone and tablets included. It's pretty impressive as far as ports go. And, who knows? Perhaps gameplay will be better on Android than on laserdisc.

Then again, after watching this video with poor dubbing, weird voice acting, and a villain wielding theand I'm not kidding hereInfant-o-ray, a gun that turns the hero into a younger version of himself, I'm not exactly optimistic. The game costs $5, if you'd like to give it a shot. We'd recommend being on WiFi for the download.

As a side note to Don Bluth: I love your work. I really do. Your films are classics and you did some innovative things back in the day that filmmaking in general has benefited from. And if you need to sign off on these ports to make money, then by all means. Just, make sure they take your name off them. You deserve better. This feels a bit like seeing Abe Vigoda in Good Burger.
