In todays edition of Fresh Android Apps, we take a look at a new voice-enabled personal assistant from Nuance Technologies, learn why the updated FlightView travel app is landing on Android tablets, and tap into a socially-driven caller identification app from WhitePages.
While there have been a number of voice-activated personal assistants for Android, none to date have come close to matching the imperfect Siri Personal Assistant found within the iPhone 4S (and presumably all next-generation iDevices). If any company has a shot at displacing Siri - or at least becoming a reliable option for Android owners - it is Nuance Technologies. The company already has Dragon Go!, a voice-enabled search engine of sorts. This week Nuance introduces Nina - Nuance Interactive Natural Assistant - which even in beta seems pretty promising. Nina is not currently available to download from the Google Play or iTunes App Stores. However, you can request more information and perhaps an early version of the app here.
Once a whimsical and practical way to see who is trying to reach you, caller identification technologies have not evolved much since mobile phones reached critical mass more than a decade ago. A new app from WhitePages looks to reverse the trend. Current Caller ID showcases recent social and status updates from those who call and text you. The app also includes a clever infographic that illustrates your calling and texting habits with your closest contacts, as well as a Frequent Caller Widget to easily reach those on your shortlist.
